Answer
Why would my usage statistics differ from the file sizes of the files I've downloaded?
All binary attachments posted to the USENET are encoded by the posting software. This encoding process converts the binary data to text for transfer over the Internet. The most common encoding methods are uuencoding and yEnc. As a result of this conversion process, uuencoding can add as much as 40% to the size of the file. yEnc is a little more efficient. Your news reader automatically handles the decoding process and saves the file in a usable format on your harddrive.
